Laboratory Assistant - Technician III - College of Arts & Sciences Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology

The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology offers a full range of courses in physical, organic, inorganic, analytical, theoretical, materials, bioorganic, bioinorganic and biophysical chemistry. The department recognizes that the link between teaching and research is a vital one in the continuously evolving field of chemistry, and ensures that students will be provided with the most advanced information and perspectives through its faculty's dual commitment to teaching and to research.

The Laboratory Assistant will Develop software for the comparison of images taken using cryogenic-sample electron microscopy with molecular dynamics data. Perform research into algorithms for rapidly performing comparisons and implement them in existing open-source libraries. Software development will take place in a python-centered environment with an emphasis of pytorch, with performant code written using CUDA kernels. Take part in the intellectual life of the lab and use the scientific literature to fulfill job responsibilities. Communicate research findings to the rest of the group and the broader research community. Write documentation for developed software and help other members of the lab integrate it into their own codebases.


This is a remote part-time (20 hours per week) 12-month appointment with the possibility for extension, depending on available funding and successful performance.


Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree and up to 2 years relevant experience or equivalent combination in computer science, computer engineering, theoretical chemistry, or a related field.
  • Must possess excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Personable, motivated and enthusiastic about working in a group environment.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment to accomplish required tasks to achieve objectives.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing, as well as demonstrated skill in understanding of cultural differences.
  • Solid grasp of the concepts underlying fast algorithms (Barnes-Hut, fast multipole, equivalent).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with python and pytorch, as well as with writing performant code in C++ / CUDA.
  • Have an intellectual interest in biochemistry, structural biology, or biophysics.
  • Solid foundational understanding of computational models for cryoEM image formation.
